Pursue Higher Education – Bicycles to college

Covid-19 pandemic has brought-in many negative impacts on education system and also minds of the students. Some of the students in our tribal area, who were in 11th standard before the pandemic kicked-in, did not realize how their 11th standard got over and how they cleared 12th standard too remotely. However, their motivation to continue further studies drastically went down. Their families got used to kids (especially girls) being around and helping them with house chores. The families which are reluctant for getting girls continue studies beyond 1oth or 12th, did not need any other reason to discontinue after pandemic period.
While in our visits to village Janathepada, we spoke to some of the girls on what they are doing and what are their plans. Some of these girls did not have any motivation or reason to continue further studies, while some were willing or open to study, their parents were not supportive and also not willing to shelve required amount of money towards fees, books etc. Based on this inputs, we convinced girls to take up further education and also met with parents of some of the girls to assure them that further studies would not change anything in their life – and also Suhrid Foundation would help their girls with their fees and books etc. With this, 6-7 girls from Janathepada got ready to start their bachelors degree again. Based on their aptitude and also available seats in college etc, we got these girls admission. 2 or three of the kids had left their studies after completing 1st year of BA course. We had to push them to take it up again and finish their degree course.
While giving them admission and books is one part, we also had to solve some of their other problems. Girls had to travel to 3-4 kms to reach to college and no direct bus or even private service available. We provided them with bicycles so that girls are motivated enough to travel together on their own.
