Suhrid Foundation conducts health checkup for school kids at school by way of medical camps twice a year. These camps don’t include explicit eye tests, as kids response to optometrists is a challenge and is difficult to manage in limited hours of the camp. Because of this, for the check-up of 600+ kids, we devised a multi-phase approach with the help of the teachers.
We give eye chart to each teacher and they conduct eye test by keeping the chart 20 feet away from the students. Once the tests are done, the information related to the lines up to which they can read, we identify the potential candidates, who may have myopia or some other challenge. These kids are then taken to an optician, who doubles up as optometrist. To avoid any ambiguity, the eyes are checked with machine and then the vision test is performed.
In camps of Feb 2026, from total of 620 students checked, 40 got shortlisted for the first level of screening at optician. From these, 32 got spectacles with number ranging from -0.25D to -4D or -5D. We provided the kids with new spectacles. Early detection helped them avoid putting strain in the eyes which may further could have lead to progressive myopia. The problems which are not addressable by optician in Vikramgad, we arrange for advanced checkup in Mumbai wherein Pediatric Ophthalmologist conduct detailed eye examination and recommend corrective measures. There were no such cases in this batch of eye checkup.
