Pedaling Towards Education: The Cycle Initiative for Rural Youth

For over thirteen years, Suhrid Foundation has been working with Zilla Parishad schools in the Vikramgad block to support the education and development of rural youth. While primary education is available within villages, students often face serious challenges in continuing their studies after Class 5 due to secondary schools being located five to eight kilometres away. With little or no public transport, many students are forced to drop out simply because traveling daily on foot is not feasible.
To address this barrier, Suhrid Foundation launched its Cycle Distribution Initiative, ensuring that distance does not come in the way of education. By providing bicycles to deserving students, the programme enables safe, timely, and dignified access to schools, saves valuable study time, and encourages children—especially adolescents—to continue their education at least up to Class 12.
The initiative has been implemented across several hamlets in Vikramgad, including Janathepada, Khandegahar, Khomarpada, Ghatalpada, and Ravatepada. The Foundation has successfully distributed 101 bicycles so far. These bicycles also benefit families, serving as a shared resource for daily needs and strengthening overall mobility within the community.
One inspiring example is Yogita from Khomarpada, who earlier walked eight kilometers daily to attend school. After receiving a bicycle, she could spend more time on her studies and complete her education up to Class 12 with better marks. She is now pursuing higher studies in Hotel Management in Wada—demonstrating how timely intervention of even small help can transform lives.
More than a mode of transport, this initiative represents hope, continuity, and opportunity. Suhrid Foundation remains committed to expanding its reach and ensuring that no child’s education ends because of distance. We thank our donor partner Vastu Housing Finance for this bicycle drive.
