Medical Camps – Apr 2023

Medical Camps – Apr 2023

Suhrid Foundation conducts camp for health check-up of 650 children from all our supported 10 schools. In the month of April 2023, Suhrid Foundation conducted medical camps for all schools before end of academic year 2022-23. From this session onwards, we had decided to request parents of children to also join during the camp – at least for 1st and 2nd standard kids. This ensured following things:

Parents could articulate problems better (eg any repetitive illness)
Parents could understand dosage of medicines better – reducing burden from teachers and also bringing-in ownership of administering medicines to kids at home
Parents could also be guided on better nutrition and taking care of their ward’s health – for which otherwise Suhrid Foundation used to arrange for separate parents’ meeting.

Main observation from the camp was – need for rebuilding up of enthusiasm and coordination amongst teachers, re-focus on nutrition and health, rekindling of all projects and processes – which were impacted due to lock-down period for around 2 years. We decided to work on this as soon as academic process starts back in Jun 2023.

Career Guidance for 10th Standard Girls

Last year, in April 2022, we started working with Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalay of Vikramgad at Waki. While we started this relationship by providing them with installation of hand-pump to the bore-well which was dug, but due to shortage of funds, could not complete the work. While working with teachers and staff of the Ashramshala, we connected with younger girls who are on the juncture of their career selection i.e. girls of 10th, 11th and 12th standard. We conducted various programs with them in guiding them, motivating them.

Khandeghar – Our New Tailoring Training Center

Khandeghar – Our New Tailoring Training Center

After seeing very positive response from women of Janathepada on their interest in learning tailoring, we realized that we can extend this to other villages as well. We discussed possibility of the same for Khandeghar. Our nursing staff from Khandeghar clinic spoke to females of the nearby hamlets.  The response was amazing and more than 40 females had shown keen interest in learning the skill. WIth 5 sewing machines , we started this training center on 7-Dec-22.

Our Village – Our Clinic | आपले गाव – आपला दवाखाना

Our Village – Our Clinic | आपले गाव – आपला दवाखाना

While having physical setup of a clinic could have been ideal thing to have at each of significant village/hamlet, it definitely is not practical approach to expand. Hence, we came up with an idea of आपले गाव – आपला दवाखाना (Our village – Our clinic) – in which we would have bare essential medical facility being made available with one of the qualified female from the village. She would be trained by us and would be able to help with very basic illness (with over the counter medicines) and also with dressing the simple wound etc. Like our clinics, these medicines would not be given for free, but patients would be charged a token amount. There would be continuous learning process for these health-workers on monthly basis, where our doctors would take their training at one central location. We would be able to propagate more health related awareness in the village and can look for driving any specific awareness drives in future.

Farming Support – Experiments with second crop

Farming Support – Experiments with second crop

Suhrid Foundation worked with 5 farmers on trial basis for getting second crop after their rice crop in October. We decided for onion, sunflower, multiple veggies (brinjal/egg-plant, bhindi/lady-finger, bottle-gird, spinach, etc). We purchased onion saplings and seeds required for this purpose. We also purchased material required for making organic fertilizers/nutrition (known as Jivamrut). Farmers were explained entire life-cycle of the crop. Once a week and later on once  in 15-days visits were done to review and guide farmers. The results were very encouraging. Farmers had vegetables for themselves and their neighbors. We also purchased few things from them.

Farmers have agreed to do serious attempt by doing cash-crop (primarily vegetables) along with rice – so that enough rice for family is made and remaining space (if any) is used in improving livelihood further. We would reconnect with farmers in second week of May 2022 for further planning.

Khandeghar CHC – Our second Community Healthcare Center

Khandeghar CHC – Our second Community Healthcare Center

Khandeghar Community Healthcare Center – our second CHC, was an unfinished task of our Masi, Ms Susmita Tembe. Though it got delayed due to pandemic restrictions her untimely exit from this world, finally it has been formally inaugurated on 19th Dec 2021 and would be starting operation of the same on 1st Jan 2022.

Masi, when visited Khandeghar in month of Feb 2021 as a routine medical visit, she spoke to teachers of the school and also local village folks about medical facility available in the region. When she realized that there are lot of challenges for them in the region, she proposed to have a medical center established (similar to one started in Kaspada) in Khandeghar as well. with the help of teacher from Khandeghar school, a meeting with villagers was called on 7th Mar 2021 in school premises. We explained the model in which we have established a Community Healthcare Center in Khandeghar. Villagers from Khandeghar liked the idea and wished to have the setup at Khandeghar as well and were open to lend the space for the same. Community hall (Samaj Mandir as they call it), was given to Suhrid Foundation to set up the center.

Pursue Higher Education – Bicycles to college

Pursue Higher Education – Bicycles to college

Motivation of tribal kids to continue further studies drastically went down post pandemic. The families were anyway reluctant for getting girls continue studies beyond 10th or 12th. In village Janathepada, we spoke to some of the girls about their plans. Some of these girls did not have any motivation or reason to continue further studies, while some were open to study, but their parents were not supportive and not willing to spend money towards fees, books etc. Based on this inputs, we convinced girls to take up further education and also convinced parents of some of the girls to assure them that further studies would not change anything in their life – and also Suhrid Foundation would help their girls with their fees and books etc. With this, 6-7 girls from Janathepada got ready to start their bachelors degree again. We also provided them with bicycles to motivate them to go together to college.
