From the month of May/Jun 2022, we met various groups of youths (Aged between 14 and 30 years) from multiple villages where we are working. The purposes of establishing connect were as follows:
- To assess various reasons for education drop-outs
- To understand reasons for not being employable (even if someone has done 12th standard or graduation)
- To understand reasons for not being able to earn their living
- To guide and reinvigorate them for their studies or for career
The causes found are:
- Zero or minimal guidance at the right age/time
- absence of hand-holding and continuous support for minor things in life
Despite so much youth-power being available, their families, society, village, and country at large – is not able to gain as much as it deserves.
Suhrid Foundation has decided to work very closely with youth from the region; in 2-3 villages to start with. In discussions, we realized that they had few immediate, but simple/basic, needs. Those were things like notebooks, textbooks, school bags, bicycles to commute, required clothes for kids in residential schools, uniforms, etc. We planned to talk to them through various opportunities and establish a positive connection with them. This also helped us understand their aspirations, their challenges, their needs to their journey for further studies and also for their career/ profession/ livelihood.
In addition, we also decided to have formal career guidance sessions with them so that their understanding about opportunities, planning, confidence and personality improve – so as to complete their education and make themselves employable. Through friends, we got connected to a reputed and professional institute in the region for career guidance. To start with, we run formal career guidance sessions only in the captive area i.e. in a Girls’ residential school (Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalay), specifically for 9th and 10th std girls. This program’s objective was to develop their personality and decision-making ability to have the necessary skill-set, understand their abilities, and choose their career wisely to lead a successful life. Based on the results, we further extended the program to another residential school we are supporting i.e. Arvind Ashram Shala, Dadade.
