The Real Heroes

These kids are from Janathepada (small village close to Vikramgad – around – 120 Kms from Mumbai). They came for the health camp on 20-Oct-13.
Their school is almost 20 kms from our camp site! Road condition is not good. As per the plan of the camp, they were expected to be there by 2:30 PM. However, they were so excited that they were ready at their school by 11am only. To make it further challenging, the tempo, which they got was very small (could hardly carry 15 to 20 adults). 50 Kids came all the way for this camp – carrying 4 big fans in the same tempo! They did not complain about bumpy ride or heat or wait. They were all chirpy.
Actually, it was a bit darker than what it appears. The kids stayed there for almost 5 hours and had very big smile on their face while leaving (Quite evident from the picture). I am sure we – the adults – would have kept complaining about the ride, heat etc. if we had gone through this.
Teachers from this school were supposed to come with only 35 students for the camp (from 1st to 4th standard). However, the batch, which moved out to 5th standard (to a different school), had developed so much of attachment with us, that they all attended the camp till the end. Most importantly, all the seniors (3rd, 4th and 5th) kids took care of 1st/2nd standard kids. These schools have scarcity of the teachers. Teachers have trained the kids so well that seniors take care of juniors in terms of movement, food/water etc. Also, when the smaller kids were given injections, seniors stood there to boost their morale.
The kids were the real heroes of the camp!
