Those memories would haunt us for more than what we expect. The outcome of the camp was positive, but was quite different than what I expected.
-
Never expected that we would handle 490+ persons in one camp.
-
Never expected that just 110 Kms away from Mumbai, we would be seeing women and kids leaving a life, which is worse than the animals.
-
Never expected that old ladies would continue working till almost they die. Can’t forget their lifeless skin, wrinkles all over the body, protruding bones, deformed skeleton and almost expressionless eyes. At times, I felt that they really don’t know what they need.
-
Never expected that more than 90% would not even know their age or can even be able to describe their problems.. All of us looked at Lipsa to just give some medicine to take all their pain off. They did not ask any questions about the medicine or the prescription.
-
Never expected that God would create such an imbalance! They are exposed to Sun all the time and must be getting Vitamin D, but not calcium. We have all the sources of calcium but strive to get Vitamin D.
-
Never expected that (like Munna Bhai MBBS), we too have two doctors without the degree! Child specialists.. Dr. Bharati Ben and Dr Patel.. Of course, Pushpa can also give proper instructions now.
-
Never expected Bharati Ben (Sorry Dr. Bharati Ben) would tell me the correct pronunciation of Folvite, when I was fumbling with it…
Our mission can’t be linked with only health in this case. It has to go more at social level. If we want to see the results then we would need to make them think. (Teaching how to fish is better than providing the fish). It may sound a quite a rude statement.. However, I found that those ladies are left with only instinct and have no power to think. I don’t think they are fighters, they are just surviving…. While entering the details in the forms, I had to bend down and go close to each kid’s face. It was so difficult to make them even utter a few words. Very different expressions in their eyes… Idea of giving those eatable to the kid was a masterstroke! Yes — Kids had million dollars smile! Thanks to our Santa (Deven), who on his own, was pampering every kid. He must be the most popular person there! It was almost like giving JADU KI JHAPPI to the kids. His role for the next camps is fixed now.
Regarding the team, less said is better! From start to end, we spent almost 8 hours to handle close to 500 patients. This was impossible without a good team work! People from different walk of life worked together and made the camp successful.
