Archive for Community Support
Similar to year 2020, year 2021 also created a grim situation for tribals in the Vikramgad region. Most of our other initiatives related to education and community support were curtailed, except medical support through our Community Healthcare Center. This was functioning completely through the lock-down period. With lock-down restrictions not being completely lifted and industries […]

Year 2020 had been very challenging due to the pandemic. All the schools in the country were closed. Vikramgadh – our catchment area – was quite isolated in the initial period. The precautions at the village level were good. Villagers believed more in isolation. They realized the havoc any such pandemic can cause to their […]

Suhrid foundation started its operation in 2012 with health care of tribal people as the primary objective. During the last seven to eight years of our association, we did lot of community related work viz reconstructing dams, de-silting river, the wells, infrastructure development for the school, tree plantations, and guiding tribals to work towards improving their livelihood. Kaspada was in the forefront where these activities were carried out because of a better connect with the people. We decided to build community healthcare center in this village. We got lot of support and encouragement from the villagers in the entire process of setting up this center.

The Warlis or Varlis are an indigenous tribe or Adivasis, found in Jawhar, Mokhada, Dahanu and Talasari talukas of the northern Palghar district, parts of Nashik and Dhule districts of Maharashtra, Valsad, Dangs, Navsari and Surat districts of Gujarat. These Warli artists use red mud walls as a canvas for their paintings. Everything about the paintings is earthy and soothing. Warli paintings use geometric shapes mostly a circle, a square and a triangle. These geometric shapes depict different elements of nature.

We planted more than 100 saplings in the vicinity (along the dam and close to the fields). We should be able to see Neem, Jamun, Moringa, Mango etc over a period of two years. The kids from Kaspada schools did the entire hard work. We distributed saplings and seeds at Khomarpada school as well. Teacher in this school is promoting growing of vegetables along with the conventional rice in Khomparpada village. The support from Hariyali (Mulund based group) was commendable in this initiative – they provided with plants and seeds.

As a part of the transfer process, both the teachers from Khandeghar were transferred to different village. We were lucky that the incoming teachers were associated with Suhrid foundation already. Hence, we did not have restart the complete process. We would be working on creating office/ storage space at the school since they have to manage with two cramped rooms, wherein most of the items are completely exposed.

Kaspada villagers approached us for help with their water problems. Their wells dried up almost by end of Feb this year (unlike April in previous years). There is a seasonal river flowing from the village. It experiences flood during main monsoon period, however, it generally dries up by Oct/Nov every year. The same river also recharges wells in monsoon, using which villagers can drag through the entire year for their water needs.

The academic session ended much before the scheduled time this year due to drought and the training of the teachers for the parliament election. We decided to focus on inducting new schools and community related work.Khomarpada, which is on the west of Vikramgadh, was identified as one of the schools, which we want to cover under our NGO activities. It is a small school with ordinary infrastructure. However, the teacher has taken lot of effort to improve the vegetation not only in the school but even at the village level. Like any other Zilla Parishad school, kids get only rice & dal as part of the mid-day meal. Teacher – with his own initiatives – added more vegetables to make it more nutritious. Additionally, he has encouraged villagers to grow vegetables at large scale apart from taking the conventional rice crop. We would be inducting this school starting June 2019. We would use the expertise of the teachers to improve vegetation across the schools.

Suhrid Foundation has been working with Kaspada school & village for last 5 years. In April 2016, Suhrid Foundation had supported the project of Kaspada villagers on building a check dam. They already had broken check dam which we had reinforced with stone, clay and plastic. This was a medium size checkdam with height of […]
