We conduct eye checkup in three stages. First stage deals with the teachers doing the first round of screening at their schools. The suspect cases are brought to Vikramgadh for the testing by professional optician. The cases of high myopia or any other complex eye problems are then finally examined at Jyotirmay Clinic Thane. We had identified 7 kids for the advanced treatment. Five cases were old, wherein we had to follow up. There were two new cases, wherein the kids showed very poor vision in one eye.

For eye checkup earlier, we used to take a combination of ophthalmologist and optometrist to the schools. This model was ok, if we had to check around 60 to 70 in a day. However, when we had to cover 500 odd kids, it was impossible to even complete the basic optometry (Checking the basic vision against the chart).

Suvarna Prashan Sanskar is one of the 16 essential rituals described in ancient Ayurveda for children. In this process Suvarna bhasma (purified ash of gold) is administered with fortified ghee prepared with herbal extracts, and honey in liquid or semisolid form to children of age group of 0-12 yrs. This is administered in Pushya Nakshatra- an auspicious day- which happens to come after every 27 days, given on this day it bestows excellent benefits.

Barafpada has 69 students up to 5th standard. We also gave tetanus injection of 24 kids including 15 kids from the first standard. The effect of these injections would be there for at least three years. Most of the challenges were related to seasonal issues. While one team was checking kids in the school, set of team members spoke with villagers about their plans associated with water conservation next year. Barafpada is one such place where water level goes down as early as February of the year, much before the start of summer. We could not work with the village last year as they were tied up digging another well for water. But it is high time they work on water conservation – an act to ensure that water percolates in the ground before they work on taking it out – using wells.

We covered Nandelpada and Guravpada for medical check up in this visit. This was the third attempt to do medical camp in Nandelpada. This being difficult school to reach, it almost is disconnected during the monsoon.
We were privileged to have Mr Latesh Shah (Founder Chairman World Human Development Center – WHDC) with us during the visit. He spent lot of time with the kids at Kaspada and Guravpada. Latesh Sir – a renowned motivational speaker – mesmerized his young audience by talking with them in their own language and making them completely open up. He tailored his message to suit to tribal kids and made a great connection with them.
