Team Suhrid conducted advanced eye camp for all the ten schools on 28th Nov, 2015. It is practically difficult for an ophthalmologist to examine 700 kids in a day or two. Hence, we had already trained teachers to conduct the first level screening using the vision chart. They conducted the test for almost 630 kids and shared the findings with us. We shortlisted 55 kids for the next level of screening by an optometrist. The kids’ eye examination was conducted using refractrometer and the results were fine-tuned by the manual verification. Out of 55 kids, 32 kids got spectacles.
Team Suhrid decided to have advanced checkup done at 3 venues viz. Guravpada, Talyachapada and Palavpada Anantpur. An eye specialist conducted the advanced eye examination. Out of the shortlisted 55 kids, 10 have been identified for further advanced examination. We would have to bring the kids to Mumbai for the comprehensive eye examination.
Most of the kids had headache, eye watering or discharge as the main problem. Doctor trained the teachers to handle the minor hygiene related issues, which can deal with these problems. Majority of the kids – identified for advanced treatment – have retina related issues. Due to the major gap in the visual acuity of the two eyes, a few kids have developed amblyopia as well. Unavailability of medical facilities for the treatment, lack of awareness amongst the parents and scarcity of early detection mechanism leads to kids developing problems, which can’t be corrected at later stage. In most of the cases of advanced treatment, the patients need to either be stationed at the hospital or make several visits. A few parents give less importance to this aspect, which results in the problems remaining untreated for long and become permanent in nature.
While the camp was meant for only the eyes, we ended up conducting a small camp at location, wherein our doctors also examined the kids and elders for rest of the ailments.
This was a completely new initiative by team Suhrid since the adaption of these ten schools.
