Medical Camp – JP – Phase 1

When we started medical camps across all the schools in 2013, we planned to get all the schools at one place. This was not a success since moving 500 kids on topsy turvy roads became a bit challenge. Moreover, we had to rush through the checkup to cover very high number of kids. Subsequently, we divided the schools into four clusters and made it the camps as two day affair. Four big schools were designated as camp sites, where we used to park ourselves. A few small schools had to travel to the nearest cluster. This model has been very effective and we never ran out of time. However, due to wide geographical spread and poor road conditions, at times even movement of the kids by tempo was becoming challenge. Hence, we decided that we would try to have the camp in individual schools as much as possible, which means we had to start the camps much earlier than the scheduled period.
We had decided to cover Nandelpada and Palavpada this time. Due to excessive rains and flooding, Nandelpada became inaccessible. We decided to cover Janathepada instead. Most of the kids had typical cough and cold, which is very common in this season. Skin infection also is rampant due to kids getting exposed to contaminated water. We covered more than 60 kids this time. Additionally, we discussed the plan for making a compound wall at Palavpada.
We had been following a certain pattern of enhanced nutrition. Since the number breaks due to holidays is more, we decided to increase the portion of vegetables. We give jaggery on three days. We have instructed teachers to add yellow grams/ groundnut as well to improve protein intake. We want teachers to grow vegetables in their garden and provide vegetables to the kids on the remaining days as well.
We distributed medicines, tooth brush/Paste, Old clothes, stationery, tie and belts.
We would be conducting Girls only medical camp at Maan Ashram Shala on coming Saturday. We would also kick off eye checkup screening as well in the month of August.
