The schools were closed for 3 weeks on account of the Diwali Vacation. We decided to start of with the school visits after the vacations were over. We visited Talyachapada and Guravpada on 16th Nov 2019. Apart from discussing the day to day issues, we had a plan to interact with the kids to assess their general awareness, communication skills and learning ability.
Talyachapada is quite away from Vikramgadh and the tribals are relatively backward. The kids are good at sports and basic activities but are not effective in communications. Guravpada was slightly better since it is close to Vikramgadh. The impact of the limitations of the current education was quite evident. Very few were able to communicate even in Marathi. Following section highlights the real challenges herewith.
- As per the current education policy, kids cant be failed till 8th. Regardless of their learning, kids keep moving up. Neither teachers nor the kids know whether the kid has understood the subjects well.
- When the kid reaches higher standards, the real test starts. Since their fundamentals are weak, they invariably fail in the exams.
- Teachers don’t have any incentive to work harder since regardless of their effort or lack of it, kids anyways move up
- Kids with poor fundamentals start dropping out after they fail in higher standards.
This is a common problem across the country in backward areas. Policy changes only can help address this issue. However, Suhrid foundation is in the process of exploring the possibilities of opening the school in that area, wherein the strict evaluation would handle this issue.
