Visit on 12-Jul- 14 was a second field visit in this academic year. Suhrid Foundation visited 4 places in this visit:
- Topalepada – to review the new school for considering for inclusion in Suhrid Foundation support
- Talyachapada – General visit
- Kaspaada – General visit
- Vikramgad – Meeting with sirs and distribution of material from NGO – Goonj
Key points from the visit
- Topalepada is located 3 Kms North East of Vikarmgad. This school has classes up to 4th standard with 43 students and managed by two teachers. The school is very well maintained and has good ambience. Support from the villagers is good. The key challenges involve unavailability of the nutritious food and waterborne diseases due to poor hygiene. The case would be reviewed for inclusion of this school in SF support.
- Visit to Talyachapada – School maintenance was good. Teachers explained the requirements in this academic year.
- Visit to Kaspada -. Kaspada school is located in the most remote areas amongst all the schools, we have included. The awareness about nutrition, hygiene, cleanliness and education was a bit lower. This school has shown maximum improvement due to tremendous drive by the teachers and the support from Suhrid Foundation:
- Though only 12 kids were expected to join class 1 from Anganwadi, the number went to 22. Parents have developed lot of respect for the school due to our efforts, which resulted in additional 10 students coming to class 1.
- Suhrid Foundation had conducted Teacher’s training program on 26th April at Mumbai, wherein the expert conducted classes on Phonics for the teachers. The progress shown by Kaspada kids was much more than expected. Many of them have been able to read simple english letters now. This initiative has been appreciated during the common school meetings for the center.
Other Common intiatives
- Suhrid Foundation wanted schools to plant and maintain medicinal plants in school compounds. On pilot basis, saplings of Aloe Vera, Basil (Tulsi), Carom seeds (Ajwain or Owa) and Neem were given to Kaspada and Nandelpada. These plants have lot of medicinal value and would help teachers provide immediate medical help in the most natural way. More additions to this is planned in coming months.
- Schools were offered with Ankalipi (preliminary book of learning letters and numbers) and slates – to students from standard 1st and 2nd. This would help improving on learning of alphabets and numbers.
- Stocks of cleaning material, medicines, first-aid kit were re-filled for next few months.
- Dustbins (2 each) has been given to Talyachapada, Kaspada and Bahirampada.
- Teachers had expressed the concerns about the containers, which are used for food storage. Any spoilage of the grain can have direct impact on the health of the kid. We sanctioned good quality 25 containers (across 9 schools).
- Suhrid Foundation has tied up with NGO – Goonj as a channel partner for ensuring the material collected by Goonj is properly distributed to beneficiaries. A BIG thanks for Goonj and its team.
It has been a wonderful beginning of this year – with all preliminary educational support requirement being closed.
