The second leg of camps was held on 11th Oct, 2014. The venues were Talyachapada and Guravapada. We were to examine 152 students at Talyachapada covering Talyachapada, Kaspada and Nandelpada. The count was 170 for the second location, which covered Guravpada and Janathepada.

Camp at Talyachapada

The camp was organized at the Anganwadi building at Talyachapda. A team of 22 volunteers, which included 2 doctors and 2 para medico conducted the camp. Talyachapada and Kaspada are in far remote area and were lagging way behind other schools in terms of hygiene, basic grooming and nutrition. These schools have progressed very well and showed great results in the last two camps. The key findings of the camp are

  • Very good hygiene, discipline and personal grooming
  • Deworming was more effective vis-à-vis last year
  • Ear Infection was quite common. Chronic cough and cold resulting in hearing losses
  • Cases of Conjunctivitis, TB and eye problems were also found

Kids showed good understanding in terms of regular bath, applying oil, nails trimming, wearing floaters, carrying handkerchief etc. However, the oral hygiene needs improvement. Most of the kids use ash or something similar to clean their teeth, which is not good from the health perspective. Almost 42 kids were given tetanus injections.

Camp at Guravpada

Guravpada is relatively bigger school with 117 students. SF started the school level drive with Janathepada almost 2 years back. Hence, we decided to even invite the kids, who – were under our supervision – and passed out from Janathepada in last two years.

Eye and ear related problems were visible during this camp as well. Major reduction in skin related issues as compared to the last camp. Oral Hygiene seems to be common challenge across all the schools. Some of the kids were earmarked for the advanced treatment.

Conclusion:

  • We conducted 4 camps in last two weeks, as per the plan
  • The target was to cover 650 kids. We covered 617 kids. Some of the kids were absent since their parents had moved
  • Tetanus was administered to the new 175 kids. With this, almost 99.5% of the kids from the ten schools have taken Tetanus injections
  • More than 50 cases have been identified for the advanced treatment. The illness include ear infection, TB, Vision problem, epilepsy, Neurological disorder etc. SF would organize for their visit to Mumbai for the advanced treatment.
  • Almost 28 volunteers and 12 teachers participated (Almost 500 hours of work in two days)
  • Detailed outline for the medication and Hygiene would be worked out and included in the post Diwali period

We were privileged to have different set of guests for each camp. They not only helped us with the successful execution, but also mixed well with the kids and the teachers.
