Suhrid Foundation as on today supports around 650 students from the ten schools in Vikramgad area. We conduct medical camps twice in a year for these kids. In our prior visits, we had committed to an Ashram Shala at Dadade to conduct medical camp for their 350 girls – with a purpose of their general checkup with specific focus on gynecological problems in their adolescent age.

Arvind Ashram Shala, Dadade is situated around 10 Kms North of Vikramgadh.  They have classes from 1st to 12th. They have accommodated around 1150 students. Out of which, around 800 are resident. Our target was to conduct a medical camp for all the 350 girls with special emphasis on the girls from 6th standard onwards.

Team Suhrid conducted the camps with the help of two senior doctors Dr. Lipsa Shah and Dr. Archana Desai. Since the hostel warden for those girls, was a nurse in her earlier profession, it was very easy for us to share the findings, explain the medications and communicate the future course of action. The girls from higher classes supported the camp by managing the queues, distributing the case papers – overall allowing the camp to run in an orderly manner.

We find variety of problems viz. Ear infection, eye problems, neurological disorder, skin problems and various types of deficiencies. when we deal with the kids from our schools. However, the girls at this Ashram Shala had challenges more related to anemia and vitamin deficiency. They did not have any issues related to skin, eyes, neurological or otherwise as they were in complete control of Ashram authorities for their food, good habits, hygiene, etc.  The primary reasons for those could be:

  • The students get 3 meals a day at the specified time. Though the meals are more carb and protein rich, timely consumption helps in maintaining good health. We would have a workshop related to vitamin / mineral deficiency.  In case of our students in the ten schools, the major challenge is linked with what they do outside the school.
  • Extremely disciplined routine. The kids have to get up in time,  carry out physical exercise (including Surya Namaskar) for an hour, recite shlokas, have meals in time and sleep for at least 8 hours in the night.
  • Constant Supervision. The wardens take care of the kids 24 hours a day. Kids are trained to maintain good hygiene, which reflect in their skin texture, teeth and overall appearance.
  • Kids are made to drink ample pure water, which is very important to maintain the balance.

We distributed medicines including multi-vitamin, Folic Acid, Calcium, Paracetamol etc.  Only two to three students have been identified for advanced treatment subject to second examination in two weeks. We also provided them some of the basic medicines – as a part of their first-aid kit.

This was one of the last activity of this year. We thank all our supporters and donors and wish a very happy new year!!
